I spent many years frustrated with the idea that I had so many ideas, so many projects that I would love to make, but never feeling like what I was able to create was good enough. I discovered that just like my spiritual life, the more I tried to be in control, the more my perfectionist self had to be in charge, the less likely I was to be successful in what I was trying to accomplish. This is true for many aspects of life, work, marriage, projects, your hopes and goals, raising children, the list could go on. I have learned that it doesn’t matter how big or little something might be, God wants control over all of it, and until we give him control we will always feel restless.
There is one purpose that God has given to all of us. To be vessels filled with Him, so that God can be seen through us to a world that is in desperate need of him. 2 Corinthians Chapter 4, Verses 3-18 says this:
“3 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. 5 For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.8 We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— 10 always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 11 For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So then death is working in us, but life in you.
13 And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,”[a] we also believe and therefore speak, 14 knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, and will present us with you. 15 For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.
16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
We need to submit our will and our control to God so that we can be usable to him. When Christ is our focus and we stop trying to juggle and dictate what we think we want, or need to do, it’s amazing how easily the things that God has planned for our life will come into fruition. We are here so that God can change lives, and for Him to be able to use us, to do that, He needs to be able to put us in places where His Glory and His Son Jesus can be seen through you. This means that God puts us in places and positions you never thought you would be in. This has happened in my family, In the winter I work at our Community College helping High-School students, I never thought I would do that, but God can be seen there. We meet people from a variety of backgrounds at Farmer’s Markets, My mom, Brother-In-Law and Aunt work at the Thrift Store, and Food Pantry, our Church started, and while we never imagined being there, God can be seen there too. So A lot of the time the things that God has planned for us looks nothing like what we were trying to force into being.
I am speaking to myself as I write this; I often have to remind myself that God is the one in control, not me, I am only the passenger on this ride. I never really thought I would be working at a college, farming, blogging, or designing shirts, but God’s plan is, by far, better than anything I could have come up with myself.
When you feel like your control is slipping, or nothing is working out how you wanted it to, find a quiet place and just listen, God is waiting, very patiently, for you to hand over your control. Sometimes its hard to leave at the feet of Jesus, I know I have taken it and given it back countless times.
My mom taught me this trick at a very young age, and the trick is this: When you are giving up control, get on your knees, and in your mind picture a box, start thinking of the things that you need to release control over, pretend that you are placing that object/thing in the box. Once you have put all the things in the box, picture being on your knees, at the feet of Jesus. You’re holding your box of things, now picture yourself taking the box and laying it down at the feet of Jesus. Now you ask him to take it, all of the things your trying to control, all your worries, your hopes, dreams, your loved ones, everything. I have done this very thing many times, and when you picture yourself physically giving the box to Jesus it’s hard to take it back because you can picture Jesus, and then you know that all of those things are in good hands with Him.
When You have given God charge over your life, you might want to fasten your seat-belt, because amazing things are about to happen.
